Lyrics: Are you tired of off days? Waking up and feeling dread? And then the rope slips and you’re weightless Sitting on the edge of your bed But you just want true love Hard won true love To make yours You fill your passport with tickets Stubs from movies in the day When you like having coffee So you can go out after 8 But you just want true love Hard won true love To make yours Angel (An angel of what?)
2.
Lyrics: Give me your hand And give me your body I’ll keep both of these I know you’re worried About being a body You’re not just a body to me
3.
Lyrics: Pour it out, my love You gave it a weight, so touch But I, I’ll never wink again It’s my New Year’s chance No more wandering hands But I, I’ll never wink again You know It’s our creation We’re a driving nation But I, I’ll never wink again You know Sirens don’t exist We like sex, so we have it But I, I’ll never wink again I’ll never wink again
4.
Lyrics: A river flows through your house It looks safe enough To try it out A morning routine It’s okay if You’re tired of it now Oh, oh It all feels normal now Jumping into the lake From the bow Oh, oh Ah, ah This is better than you ever bet Happiness This rush of life, and good You’re out of bed, you’re out of bed
5.
Lyrics: When I left You took Plan B Always thinking “This should be better than it is” It’s not romantic To drink in the day No matter how much we say it is That first love Aimless, aggressive But it’s been nine years And no amount of travel Could make it okay Oh, you know You know How hard
6.
Lyrics: You take it off the shelf Sheepish, darling It’s a rumour in the dark For the weakest feelings And you are You are You are everything I want And you are You are You are Everything at once Let me in, it’s got cold The warm side of the blanket And pulling your face into mine Is the strongest, greatest feeling And you are You are Bodies And we’re not just bodies And we’re not just bodies And we’re not just bodies
7.
Lyrics: You left me at the Vancouver tide You left me higher than high If I pull out If I pull out again I won’t Where’s the wine? I was gonna kiss you tonight I love you You left me at the Vancouver tide You left me higher than high You left me at the Vancouver tide Where’s all the good wine?

Lyrics: Don’t lose your head You can make a change I read it in “Two Solitudes” Next to a description of the Great Lakes “Two Solitudes” This is not your life This is not your world These are not your words These are not your words Not your words True Solitude True Solitude True Solitude I see it clearly now Myself pushing out the door The streetcar into town Just keep the trip short Into town True Solitude True Solitude True Solitude Ha, ha, ha Who let you out? Nice you’re awake Nice you’re awake Who let you out? Nice you’re awake Nice you’re awake Who let you out? Nice you’re awake Nice you’re awake Who let you out? Nice you’re awake Nice you’re awake

Lyrics: Little country mouse Goin’ to put her tools away again Back out, behind the shed Asked could we help her out Got a husband, a boyfriend, and a kid Needs to learn how to be less delicate So we have him run, and run, and run, and run, and run, and run around a bit And then we took her out Oh yeah you best believe we did But you won’t believe what we did But she wanted it She wanted it Little Country Mouse And later in the month A little, secret date of our own commenced Picked her up in nothing but her dress Asking could she light my cigarette And she did, and she did, and she did, and she did, she did Then she burned off all my fingertips Oh man how far we’d taken this This country mouse was getting fed Didn’t even see the ridge’s edge Took me back to her backyard tool shed This country mouse was getting fed This country mouse was getting fed

Up We Go 02:50
Lyrics: I’m an uncleaned yard An uncleaned yard I’m an impression Of a heart But up we go Up we go Up we go Up we go Up we go Up we go This isn’t marriage But it’s a start We’re not parents Sometimes we are But up we go Up we go Up we go Up we go Up we go Up we go But up we go Up we go Up we go Up we go Up we go Up we go

You're Not Just A Body to Me, the follow-up album to my 2019 full length debut, Christmastown.

Christmastown ends on a note of retreat - of withdrawing into one's self. The most important, relevant lyric from that song comes at the end of the second verse:

"And the faces are ugly, and no one is young / I'm goin' home to be on my own for the month"

The folks on You're Not Just A Body to Me seek something else. It begins:

"Are you tired of off days? Waking up and feeling dread? And then the rope slips and you're weightless, sitting on the edge of your bed."

There has to be more to this feeling of depression, even if you can use it to fuel something good, like making art.

I read a review of Wilco's Summerteeth record recently. The author of the review (it was a retrospective) pointed something out that I think makes sense. It was a tough time for the band's songwriter, Jeff Tweedy, but because it's one of their best records people think feeling depressed and unhappy is what became the impetus for all this great material, but the reviewer suggests that the record is amazing not because of what the depression did to Tweedy, it's amazing because Tweedy made it DESPITE being depressed at the time. It's not a testament to depression as creative fuel, it's a testament to Tweedy's mental fortitude against something that from the outside seems insurmountable.

That is the kind of feeling I tried to bring to You're Not Just A Body to Me.

While You're Not Just A Body to Me deals with the issues depression and anxiety create, it also deals - thankfully - with a new found ability to weather those issues. They won't be solved, but it's understood that they will ebb and flow, and that's okay. The ability to handle those ebbs and flows is itself a version of a "win".

The album title, "You're Not Just A Body to Me", refers to a sense of self, developed from learning to deal with your internal issues, and also having a partner to lean on.

Often when I feel depressed or anxious, it puts me in a place where I want to do random (occasionally harmful) things because it dawns on me "I am just a body, so who cares". It's this sense of detachment that allows people to believe their lives are meaningless, making it that much easier to take their lives*.

That's why, for me, a title or message like "You're not just a body to me" means so much. It's a reminder that - from any outside perspective, a secondary part of yourself, a partner, your parent(s), your sibling(s) - you may feel a certain way, but your impact on other people could be and probably is something entirely different, and sometimes if you remind yourself of that, it provides enough of a push to make it through the episode.

Christmastown is an album about mental illness and there being no light. You're Not Just A Body to Me is a step forward into a space with some light, which stems from a variety of sources.

The subject in "Christmas Town" wants to go "home to be on my own for the month". The character(s) throughout You're Not Just A Body to Me have gained a little more mental fortitude, and seek a higher standard of living.

Put another way, they don't just want to survive, they want to live.
